Ever get in a funk? Feel a little depressed and feel like you just can’t get out of that hole? I hate when that happens and believe me when I say, after this past month, I know the feeling all to well. But I am, by nature, a glass half-full girl and you can’t keep me down for long.

I have a few things I do to move past the funk.

Cry it out. I’m sure it sounds counterproductive to give into the depression and cry but it really is the best thing for you. Trust me. I watch the biggest tearjerker that I can find and then I just cry it all out.

Most recently, I’ve used The Last Song, The Passion of the Christ and Beaches to aid me on my path to ugly cry. There is nothing more cathartic than a good hard, ugly cry. For me this works because if I push it down and hold it in, that ugly cry seeps out at the most inappropriate times and then it really is UGLY.

I feel pretty. Wear something bright and beautiful that makes you feel sexy. There is just some thing about wearing an outfit that shouts happy and go-lucky that is contagious.

It’s like trying to be in a bad mood when a baby smiles at you. You practically have to be inhuman for that to be possible. And wearing something that makes you feel sexy, whether it be the color, design, cut or fabric, if you feel sexy, you will be happy.

Have a drink. I’m not talking about a cocktail because honestly, that will probably just make you feel worse and end up crying. I love you, man. I’ve always been an emotional crier and no matter what I’ve bottled up, alcohol is the elixir that just releases everything. Not always a good thing, especially if you are out in public making an ass of yourself.

I recommend drinking water and lots of it. Not only does it make you look beautiful and feel better, it keeps you hydrated and a little bit of dehydration can make you have an absolute miserable mood.

Have a girl’s night. If you’ve ever been in a funk and had a girl’s night out at a comedy club or a karaoke bar, you know that they work just about as well as emotional cleansers as crying it out. If you are singing your heart out or laughing your butt off, it is a definite stress buster and can complete lift your funky mood.

Work it out. Go for a long run or take a spin class. I know it sounds ridiculous because the last thing I want to do when I am in a funk is get out of bed and work out, but the endorphins that are released during a workout, can make you feel amazing. Not to mention, it will make you feel better about yourself.

So, next time you are feeling down in the dumps, try a few of these funk-lifting remedies. I bet you’ll turn that frown upside down and realize that it’s not so bad after all. What do you do to feel a little cheerier?
