Timeless Trend: Nautical

Nothing says summer like nautical inspired dress. It is a timeless look that fits in with all the events and activities that the summer brings in, and with the Fourth of July upon us, the nautical look is the perfect way to infuse a little patriotic flair into your summer wardrobe but then still allow for it to be a fashionable look after the fact.

I’m a huge fan of wearing basics and then dressing it up with accessories. I love the idea of wearing a basic white cuffed short with blue tee as the foundation to this look. I’m loving the ceramic white watch with a dusting of bling and the navy sandals with a touch of metal hardware – it makes me think of hardware that might be on a sailboat.

With kids in tow, you might think you can’t do white but I say why not throw on some white shorts when you’re having lunch with the girls? You don’t have to wear the shorts when the kids are around! How many of us dress better for our girlfriends than our significant others? {raises hand}

And don’t you love this blue and white striped bag with rope handles? It’s a perfect infusion of the nautical trend but it’s a completely practical bag for a mom on the go.

I love the pop of red that completes the look below with the patent leather ballet flats. An additional way to add that pop of color would be through a chunky red bangle or beaded bracelet and earrings. You could swap out the white handbag for a red one and voila!

And who doesn’t love a fantastic pair of aviator shades? They are all the rage right now – I’m not certain those will be a timeless trend, but they are definitely “on trend” right now. You’ll get the hot mom stares in those.

The key elements needed to pull off the nautical look are as follows:

  • A color scheme of navy blue, white and a pop of color like red, yellow or kelly green. Red is usually the fan favorite and perfect for the Fourth of July and Labor Day holidays.
  • Navy Blue striping should come into the look somewhere, whether that is in the tee shirt, handbag or even a fantastic wedge.
  • Rope details in your accessories add a nice touch to the look.
  • White in the way of leather sandals, rope detailing, or tees are also a necessary element to the nautical look.
  • Touches of gold are also a great addition to the nautical look but be mindful so it’s not overkill. A few bangles, gold hoop earrings or a statement ring or sandals with a bit of gold detailing would be enough.

The nautical look is timeless so anything you purchase that contributes to this look should be considered an investment piece – spending a little bit extra on these wardrobe staples would not be a waste of your money.

Do you love the nautical look or despise it?
