Probably one of the most memorable things about high school is the prom. It’s the one night you get to dress up like a princess and really feel the part – sort of like a bridal practice run.
Have you priced dresses? They are ridiculously expensive. Proms are super expensive these days with limos, designer dresses and everything else. It is tough on kids (and parents) from middle class families but kids from low income families can miss out.
Well, a teacher in New Jersey has hit upon a fabulous idea and she is making a difference in her community because of it.
She has, with the help of parents and other teachers, created a prom dress closet in her home. She calls it “The Ballroomâ€.
The dresses have come from all over. Individuals donate new and gently used items, a local bridal shop cleared out their outdated showroom dresses and donated them – the response has been wonderful. She has collected over 100 dresses and eight men’s formal suits. Many of the dresses still have tags on them.
She created cards announcing the program and the school put a card in each report card that went home so that it would be discreet. The kids who get the clothing remain anonymous so that not one of their peers knows that they are wearing a dress that was given to them. They have the freedom to feel like princesses – just like everyone else.
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if this trend took over the entire country?
