Do You Have A Personal Bubble?

When I lived in New York, I rode the subway every day to graduate school. Some part of me loved this time in such a public place because I could watch people freely, knowing I was probably being watched by another voyeur. Also, I felt alone, as if I was in my own world. Not in a ‘lonely in a crowd’ sort of way but more like one of the many, going about my day, together but separate.

About a year later, when I was traveling with my husband, he needed some privacy for a phone call but we were in a hotel room and it was too cold to get up and go outside. So I gave him ‘subway privacy’ and closed my eyes.
