It’s easy to let the toys in our home take over and get out of hand – especially when more than one child comes into the mix and/or we have a small space to contend with. So how do we handle that?

Below are some tips.

Purge

Sell toys to second hand stores, donate those that you can’t sell, and throw out those that have seen better days. Make it a regular routine to go through your toys on a quarterly basis and consider rotating sets of toys if you aren’t quite ready to throw them out to cut down on the clutter.

Find Storage that Works for Your Space

Depending on your space you have to make storage work as best as you can. You may need to repurpose or hide things underneath furniture or within closets, but it is possible to make toy storage work in a smaller space.

Additionally, plenty of shelving, baskets and containers with lids are always helpful. Consider also using a labeling system – whether that is with a labeling gun or your elementary age daughter with fantastic handwriting and an affinity for decorative drawings – labels are always helpful if you are stacking lidded bins into a closet.

Tame Your Spending Ways

The imagination is a beautiful thing so your child will be ok without the next best thing, I promise you that. Barbie will sleep just as nicely on a tissue box bed with wash cloth bedspread as she will on the expensive counterpart that costs an arm and a leg in the toy store.

Your child will fare better if they aren’t given everything on their wish list. By allowing them to delve into their brain power and use it as it was meant to be used in their youth – for creativity and imagination – you are arming them with skills that will carry them into a future without limitations.

Change Birthday Gift Giving Policies to Lessen the Number of Toys

Instead of having guests bring gifts of toys to your chid’s birthday party, consider having them bring toys that will be donated to a local children’s hospital or shelter so the number of toys you have coming into your home is less.

Additionally,  you can consider the Four Gift Rule on your part:

We definitely have to do some purging — there are way too many toys in our home! I am also working on creating a basement playroom and adding some toy storage.

The 4 gift rule is awesome.  I had to “pin it!”  It’s also something kids can understand and is “fair” for everyone!

This is so true!  I always try to remember that even the toys my daughter loves the most only stay popular for a few weeks.  Eventually she finds something else she wants to play with and gets bored with any toy, no matter how cool.  I also think giving stuff away is so important.  Or even just throwing it away if you can’t find all the pieces.  Seems wasteful, but I love having a non-cluttered house!
