Netflix Spotlight: Super Why!

I’m not a huge fan of most television programs for toddlers and preschoolers, but Super Why! is definitely worth a look if you’re searching for shows to entertain kids ages 2 to 6.

This show follows a cast of fairy tale characters as they look for answers to common problems by magically jumping into different books and taking part in the story.

The main reason I love this show is that it was wonderful to use as a starting point for getting my son really excited about learning to read.

When he saw the characters looking to books for the answers to the problems they encountered in their lives, he started making connections between his favorite stories and his own daily activities.

He’s in second grade now, but I really do think watching Super Why! and making the transition from viewing books as bedtime stories to seeing them as a broader part of life is part of the reason why he’s such an avid reader.

Another thing I really like about Super Why!, compared to some of the other shows for young children, is that it appeals equally to both boys and girls.

When he was younger, my son loved Whyatt’s alter ego, Super Why. Princess Pea satisfies the girls who love to play dress up, while Wonder Red is more of a tomboy. Pig provides comic relief for both boys and girls.

Netflix has 64 episodes of Super Why! available for instant streaming. All of the episodes are 27 or 28 minutes long, which makes them perfect for keeping your kiddos occupied when you’re busy making dinner or trying to get the laundry monster back under control.
