Need a Pick-Me-Up? Try a Pop of Neon

We could all use a little color in our lives; since our kids’ rooms might be awash with brights, it’s natural to want to swerve dramatically in the opposite direction and make the rest of our homes as neutral as possible, trying to make things a bit more sophisticated.

But perhaps due in part to the current obsession with colorblocking, there’s a fantastic way to infuse a little whimsy into an otherwise grown-up space: a perfectly-placed pop of neon.

Most of us remember the 80s with all its Day-Glo glory and know better than to revisit the neon overload of the day, but small doses of the brightest of brights can seriously pack a punch. In today’s lead image, several colors are peppered throughout an otherwise grey space, leaving behind a candy-coated effect that’s practically edible.

Adding just a single element to a room, such as a door or a coat of paint on a set of table legs, is a quick and relatively easy way to jump on the trend without too much commitment, making it simple to switch up later on. For the time being, though, taking the plunge into bold, bright color can literally and figuratively have an empowering and awakening effect.

Yes, its great to be sprucing up life with color. I always think we should do it with real life too. Life can be overwhelmingly dull. Work, cook, dishes, bedtimestories, brushing teeth… and then…DATENIGHT!

Ahhh, I grew up in the 80′s and I definitely have a
fondness for neon. Couldn’t help but smile walking down the aisle in target the
other day it’s like a neon rainbow :-)

Been having fun with the pops of neon in Spring fashion, but didn’t even think of using it in home decor.  Love it!!  Thanks for the inspiration, as always!

I think a pop of neon would be great in a nursery these days too.  Especially since it may not be in fashion for long.  Once you’re ready to bring in older toys/furniture/decor, you can move on to the next fun trend.  Having lived through the 80′s Oakley stage, I’m not sure I could bring it into the rest of my house…maybe in the kitchen though.
