Several years ago, my daughter and I went on a 10-day trip to Europe. We had a fabulous time visiting with a close friend of mine who was living in Germany while her husband served our country. During our stay we visited several countries and had our first encounter with IKEA.
Now, at the time, I had no idea that there was an IKEA so close to my own home (like, two hours close). So when we went to the ginormous store, I did crazy amounts of shopping and ended up bringing home a boatload of stuff. In fact, looking back, I probably should have just shipped it all home, rather than checking it as luggage. But whatever, hindsight is 20/20, right?
And while I love the prices and eclectic nature of IKEA, my one complaint has to do with how plain most of their furniture is. The styling is very cute, but the basic furniture is very plain and simple. So I’ve often wanted to spice up the pieces we have from them.
Recently I came across the website MyKea.com. This is such an ingenious site! With the slogan of “say NO to NAKED furniture,” they’ve designed a slew of stickers that can be applied to many different models of IKEA furniture. From bookcases to tables, you can make your new stuff silly, classy, or fun.
Basically, the idea started when this creative company needed their own furniture spiced up. They measured the IKEA furnishings they had and asked some of those creative-types to come up with some fun ways to “fix-it-up.” The result was so amazing, they started a business out of it. And from the looks of the site, business must be booming.
Easy to navigate, you can select by the type of furniture you have from the main collection or the children’s collection. Depending on which pieces you have, certain sticker collections will be available to you. The first piece (shown above) is from the children’s collection, while the piece below is from the main collection.
Prices are quite reasonable and are listed in Euros, but the site does give you the option to switch the price to dollars, which makes it easy to do your shopping and stay on budget. I’ve added several items to my cart and the shipping price is remaining steady at $10, so I believe they must ship by weight and stickers aren’t heavy, so I would assume you could purchase plenty without outrageous shipping fees.
Check out MyKea and tell me what you think. Is this something you’d be interested in doing? Or is it too specialized?
