Kiss Me Darling: Just Wipe that Lead Off Your Lips First

A new report from the FDA says yes, but the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics says no?

So what’s going on?

Turns out if you’re a fan of any of the 400 lipsticks tested—including L’Oreal and Cover Girl—you could be smooching with lead-coated lips.

While the FDA found only minimal traces of the neurotoxin and claims that it’s not enough to be cause for concern, the levels have doubled since their last test. And the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is not buying the FDA assessment, stating that, “…lead builds up in the body over time and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels.”

So what do you think? Do you own any of the Top 10 Lead-Filled Lipsticks? Will you be selective in your lipstick purchases? Are you concerned over the FDA’s findings about lead in lipstick?

I’m concerned enough, but I cant give up my makeup ritual yet. What are you suggesting?

I’m very concerned about the ingredients that are in makeup. I have a teenage daughter who has just started using makeup in the last year or so. We try to stick to brands that are more natural like Arbonne or Bare Escentuals, but still use some drugstore brands as well. I feel like it’s hard to really know exactly what we’re being exposed to (I can’t even pronounce half the items on ingredients list, let alone know whether they are dangerous or not). I’m definitely going to go check out the lipstick list you referenced above. Thanks!

Wow, this is concerning to say the least! We need a list of lipstick manufactures that guarantee their lipsticks are 100% lead free…

It is disconcerting. I don’t wear much makeup anymore though.
