It has been on the New York Bestseller list. It has been mentioned over and over on TV. There are memes associated with it on Facebook and Pinterest – is there anyone that has not at least heard about 50 Shades of Grey?
I should admit that I have not read the book and I am not sure whether or not I will for a variety of reasons. I have scanned some of the pages that were available on Amazon, and I have friends who have read the book, so I do know something about the plot.
I have heard it classified as porn and poor writing, and I have heard it called a fascinating look into the human psyche. Since the last bit of fiction I read was Where the Wild Things Are I am not sure that I am ready for the leap into the darkness of people’s private psyches and I prefer reality to reading when it comes to sex.
Having admitted that, I must also say that I am fascinated by the popularity of this book, which is the first in a trilogy. I have to wonder what emotional hook it has on its readers to make them so enthusiastic about the story. I have not met one person that has actually read the book, cover to cover, that hasn’t loved it on some level.
So, I am torn. Part of me is intensely curious about why this book is so popular and another part of me hesitates to invite images into my head that might stir up my own personal demons – and be difficult to get rid of.
I am firmly on the fence. Will you read the book? If you have read it did you love it or hate it?
