The temperature is rising and the sun is shining and, lets face it, there is not too much that we wouldn’t do to stay cool this summer. And when I say cool, I don’t just mean temperature wise.
I mean, after all, just because we are moms doesn’t mean that we want to live in yoga pants and t-shirts. No, we are not perpetually working out but it’s comfortable. It feels like home. We’ve been wearing these suckers since we brought our first baby home.
Hey, at least we’re shaving our legs these days and we are not wearing the maternity shorts this summer. But still, there has to be more to life than just getting by. Clothes need to be about more than JUST function.
Here are a few must have pieces that every mother should have in her wardrobe this summer, according to me.
Sleeveless shirts: Come on, I know there a 101 reasons not to wear sleeveless shirts; your arms are too big, your arms are too small, you have bat wings, your arms are too white, hairy or you have Popeye forearms and you just can’t bear the thought of showing them to the general public.
I say forget it. It’s hot and you don’t know these people. Be comfortable, be cool and stop looking inappropriate by wearing long sleeves in the summer.
Cotton capris: I love plain white cotton or linen capris. They are fashionable from Memorial Day through to Labor day. They pair beautifully with the sleeveless shirts or a bold, bright flouncy top.
Add a pair of cute espadrille wedges to dress the outfit up or a pair of cute flat sandals for a day of shopping with your friends, or your kids; either way, you will be able to keep up.
Floral prints and bold, bright patterns: That’s right, they are back and all over the place. Channel your inner hippie and embrace the bold patterns. Have some fun, pair it with a big floppy straw sun hat. You will feel beach worthy and look hippie chic.
Jumpers, short and pants, either way they are making a comeback. Yes, jumpers are so 1970’s disco but they are really cute and travel well. They are way comfortable and have just a touch of sexy.
High-low hemline maxi dresses: These are the biggest craze this summer. I keep saying that I am not crazy for them but, as evidenced by my prom photo, I apparently am an undercover high-low hemline fan.
There is a major bonus, if you are a little more blessed in the derriere region, no need to fuss about it riding up in the back. The high-low hemline has you covered, girlfriend.
Espadrilles: We’ve touched on this earlier this spring but it bares repeating, if you want the hottest looking and most comfortable style this summer (which just so happens to pair incredibly with hippie chic) you must get yourself a pair of espadrilles.
A great fitting bathing suit: You know you are going to have to get in one so you may as well get one that you love aesthetically and that you feel comfortable in. No point in wasting your money on a suit that you are going to be constantly pulling at or refuse to wear altogether.
Big, dark sunglasses: Not only do these sunglasses hide the mommy exhaustion, they protect your eyes from the suns rays and make it easy to keep your eyes on the kids at the pool without the other mom’s knowing that you are not listening to what they are saying or the kids knowing that your watchful eye is on them at all times.
There are lots of wonderful styles that you could choose this summer, but if you have a least one of each of these items mentioned above, you can mix and match them and have several great outfits this summer. What is your go to piece this summer?
