Easy Being Green: Herb Gardening Kits

Everybody loves a miniature herb garden. For those of us who aren’t particularly green-thumbed, though, there are a few easy alternatives that take the guesswork out of the “do it yourself” part, and some even make a point of involving the whole family in a fun weekend (and ongoing) activity.

The best part? We’re no food scientists around here, but we’re pretty sure the knowledge that you’ve grown your own seasonings make a meal at least 20 percent more delicious.

To start simply, there’s Toysmith’s Grow Your Own Italian Herb Garden Kit (shown above; $15), which comes with a 5″ terra cotta planter; chive, basil and oregano seeds; peat pellets; growing instructions and a small recipe book.

And now, something for the kiddos — the inventive folks behind DuneCraft have put together a series of no fewer than eight terrarium gardens ($20-25) designed specifically for kids.

A great starter: the Farmer’s Garden, with sweet peppers, strawberries, green beans, mini-carrots and lettuce, also comes with adorable farm animal decals and a collection of stakes to identify each plant.

For those of us who consider ourselves to be completely hopeless when it comes to horticulture, the AeroGarden ($150 for a seven-pod model) comes to the rescue, basically doing our jobs for us entirely using aeroponic technology. Gotta love science!

Love the adorable farm kit one! I especially love the kits for beginners or children because they come with everything you need to get started and are easy to put together. Recently tried a mushroom kit I got here

and the kids thought it was great!
