Sydnie recently did a school assignment for her health class … and it involved us as parents, too. We had to go through our medicine cabinet.
Now, the point of the assignment was to take a look at what medications could be potentially addictive and/or dangerous to people in the house. None of us take any prescription medications, so frankly, actually going through our medicine cabinet rarely occurs to me.
But the truth of the matter is, I actually found a ton of expired over-the-counter medications that I wouldn’t even have thought about (because, after all, that was part of the assignment).
Not only is it a good idea to go through the medicine cabinet to look for expired medications, it’s also a good idea to take another look at your medicines … even the over-the-counter kind. Do any of them look like candy? It’s amazing how many of them do.
Make it a habit to go through your medicine cabinet once a month … on the same day. That way, you don’t forget. Immediately dispose of any expired medications and take stock of things you’re running low on (children’s pain/fever reducer, gas reducer, etc.) so you can purchase them the next time you’re at the pharmacy.
And if you have expired prescription medications, be sure to dispose of them properly (which does not include flushing them down the toilet … not that I would ever do such a thing … )
